Ina Ray ‘Mickey’ Mateo, friendship high priority

March 1, 2021

Ina Ray “Mickey” Mateo, 83, passed away peacefully at Penn Presbyterian Hospital Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021.

Mickey was born in Salisbury, Md., Sept. 14, 1937, to the late Fulton Gravenor and Elizabeth Conner-Gravenor.

At an early age, Mickey was passionate about singing as she travelled across Virginia in their state choir group.  She attended Menchville High School and studied at Christopher Newport University.

Friendship meant the world to her.  She would go out of her way to be the hand to hold, shoulder to cry on, and would always share her words of wisdom.  She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, but her competitive nature would never let you win.  While she had many talents from radio advertising, car sales, modeling and waitressing, she also owned an antiques store and Jenkins Corner Market Liquor and Grocery Store.  However, Mickey’s true passion was when she became a Realtor in 1989.  Helping people by being honest and caring was her true purpose in life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Mateo; daughters, Susan Jenkins and Diane Jenkins-Deaton; son, Edward ‘Buddy’ Danley; grandsons, Brian Deaton and Paul Deaton.

She is survived by her sister, Jacqueline Pierce (David) of Beverly Hills, Fla.; children, Cindy Moon of Harrington, Michael Batkins (LeeAnn) of Carrollton, Va., Terri Jenkins-Favata (Jim) of Harrington, and Ronald Jenkins Jr. (Lisa) of Harrington, and Helen Jenkins-Martel (Al) of New Bedford, Mass.; her grandchildren, Elliott Boone, Tony Favata, Michael Batkins Jr., Allison Batkins, Patrick Deaton, Angie Costa, Melinda Costa, JC Clogg, Cody Clogg; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mickey will be held Friday, March 5, at 4 p.m., in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front St., Milford, where friends may call after 2 p.m.  All those in attendance must wear a mask and adhere to all social distancing and gathering protocols.
