Individual Education Plan workshops begin Oct. 9

October 4, 2018

Many parents who are working through the Individualized Education Plan system may find the initial meetings and decisions confusing. Frankford Public Library Director Rachel Wackett said, “As a parent with a child receiving services, I understand that this can be an emotionally overwhelming process.”

The Frankford Public Library Parent Information Center will offer four IEP-centered workshops in October, from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays, Oct. 9 to 30. Workshops can help both parents and school districts by providing additional resources regarding the IEPs and 504s for learning behavior accommodations. A variety of materials relating to IEPs will be covered. Community members may attend the sessions of their choice; it is not necessary to attend all four.

The Oct. 9 session will cover eligibility basics and transitional IEPs. The Oct. 16 session will cover developing IEP basics and understanding measures of success. The Oct. 23 session will address Section 504 plans and services for behavior accommodations. The Oct. 30 session will focus on students with ADHD and strategies to support learning at home. Parents will learn about navigating IEPs and special education, and advocating for their children’s rights.

Wackett said, “This is really exciting because we are running these workshops right as kids are getting their first semester progress reports. As parents are receiving feedback about their kids, they may have questions regarding IEPs, 504s and what the learning team can do, and this is a great opportunity to come and get that information.”
