During their May camping weekend, Georgetown Troop 95 scouts had the opportunity to learn about Battle of Gettysburg and its place in the American Civil War.

Lodging at Camp Conewago in nearby Oxford, Pa., scouts headed to Gettysburg National Military Park, where they explored educational displays and galleries before heading out to explore the historic trails.

Saturday, scouts and leaders took on the 10.2-mile Billy Yank Trail hike. Covering a tremendous amount of ground, they viewed hundreds of monuments to soldiers from both Union and Confederate states who were committed to this Civil War. Near Little Round Top, they took a break for lunch. Then they continued hiking through the battlefields and listening to the older scouts read about the war. 

At the end of the hike, they loaded up and visited the Eisenhower National Historic Site, which was the home of U.S. Army general and President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife Mamie. 

Sunday morning, scouts and leaders returned to the park and hiked the 4.2-mile Johnny Reb Trail, making a stop at the visitor's center gift shop. For the final leg of the hike, they boarded the van and headed to the Historic Gettysburg Trail in town. Once all the hiking was complete, scouts and leaders were treated to ice cream at a local shop.

On the way home after an eventful weekend, the scouts rested and shared recaps of all they had seen and learned.
