Irene I. Holston, dedicated to community

Irene I. Holston of Millsboro passed away at home in the care of her devoted family and Delaware Hospice Friday, March 27, 2020. She was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Millsboro to the late Harry and Lydia Quillen. 

Mrs. Holston was very devoted to her family, who meant everything to her. She was married to Granville Holston for 70 years. He preceded her in 2018.

She retired from Stockley Center, where she was an attendant and cared for patients throughout her career. She was also very dedicated to her community. She and Granville drove neighbors to doctors’ appointments. Irene was true to her neighbors and helped in any way she could. She was described by many as very kind, and was a servant who served with a loving heart. Irene was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro for 79 years. 

She is survived by her children: Peggy Holston Harrelson of St. Mary’s, Ga., and Judy Lee Hall of Millsboro.  Also surviving is her brother: Albert Quillen (Nancy) of Millsboro. She was preceded by a brother, Stewart Quillen.  Mrs. Holston has six grandchildren: Julia Messick Verbanic and her husband Steve (Christina, Julius, Lauren, and Kaitlin); Pamela Lynn Shockley and her husband Jeff (Bo and Paige); Kevin Allen Hall and his wife Janice; G.G. Messick and his wife Kristina (Delana); Curtis Everett Hall and his wife Heather (Kenzie and Kylee); and Emily Messick Pettyjohn and her husband David (Rylee and Cale). She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the many caregivers who have cared and loved for Mrs. Irene over the last two years, with the most recent being Barbara Callaway, Peggy Oakley and Brenda Messick. They would also like to thank Delaware Hospice for the care and support they offered to both Mrs. Irene and the family. A graveside service will be officiated by David Pettyjohn. Due to the state of emergency and COVID-19 viral restrictions, the service will be held privately.
