James Robert Van Pelt, 92, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born Nov. 1, 1933, in Lewes, he was the son of the late Ernest and Lula Van Pelt. He was a University of Delaware alumnus and served his country in the United States Army Reserve. He leaves a legacy of devotion, hard work and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

He shared 68 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Jean Van Pelt. Together, they built a life marked by love, commitment, and treasured memories. He was a devoted husband, loving father to his two sons and proud grandfather to four grandchildren who brought him great joy.

Bob found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. He was a lifelong model train enthusiast, and he loved fishing and playing golf with friends and family. He also enjoyed socializing at Lewes Yacht Club and Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

He devoted 48 years to his career as a river pilot with the Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River Delaware, a profession that reflected his skill, responsibility and deep connection to the river. Respected for his knowledge and experience, he was committed to guiding vessels safely through the waterways he knew so well.

Bob will be remembered for his deep love of family, strong work ethic, and life of integrity. His wisdom, stories, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Ellen V. Morris and Ruth V. Beebe. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean; his sons, Lynn and David (Pam); his grandchildren, Robert, Kathryn, Nathan and Jeremy; and many relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes, where family and friends may gather beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will be private at St. Peter's Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.
