Janet Gelato services set Sept. 22

A Celebration of Life will be held for Janet Gelato at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22,  at Community Lutheran Church, 30897 Omar Road, Frankford. The Rev. Mark Molter, pastor of Community Lutheran, will be the presiding minister, and the Rev. HG "Skip" McComas, pastor at Grace of God Lutheran, will be preaching. Reception to follow in Luther Hall.

Janet Lois (Meicke) Gelato, 72, formerly of Millsboro, died of colon cancer Aug. 30, 2018, at Seasons Hospice Unit in Newark. She was born Aug. 23, 1946, in Jersey City, N.J., to William and Dorothy Meicke.

Janet graduated from William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City in 1964. She married her longtime sweetheart Jim Gelato April 14, 1973, at Grace Lutheran Church in Jersey City. Janet became a professional secretary at Sea Coast Realty and Resort Quest Realty. After retiring from her professional career, Janet lovingly devoted herself to the Foster Grandparent Program established by the state of Delaware, and guided/tutored and loved students at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View and Long Neck Elementary School.

As an active member of Community Lutheran in Omar, and later at Grace of God Lutheran in Millsboro, Janet sang in the choirs and knitted hundreds of prayer shawls for cancer patients.

Janet was a loving and caring person, giving of herself to others. She loved her family very much. She was predeceased by her brother Robert Meicke, and her son Jackie Gelato in 1974. She is survived by her husband Jim; her son Tom and daughter-in-law Jill; two grandchildren, Jack and Kasey, from Swedesboro, N.J.; and daughter Kathy and son-in-law Florian, currently living in Berlin, Germany.
