John M. Hitchens Jr., highway dept. retiree

John M. Hitchens Jr., 92, of Georgetown, passed away at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

John worked many years for Delaware Highway Transportation in Ellendale.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John M. Hitchens Sr. and Margaret West Hitchens; his twin who died at birth; his brothers, Harvey, Hoyt and Donnie; and his sisters, Mildred Hudson, Ruth Littleton, Kathryn Meredith and Marie Ellingsworth.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Fowler Hitchens. They were together for 60 years. He is also survived by five daughters, Shirley Hitchens, Becky Bunting (Stanley), Peggy Coulbourne (Jim), Becky Perry (Bob), and Debra Beasley and her friend Mike Roach; eight grandchildren, Kelly Nichols (Chris), Chris Bunting (Robin), Jennifer Santini (Mike), Jessica Hazzard (Allen), Kim Rogers (Bobby), Laci Christ (Brian), Lance Beasley, and Laurin Beasley and her fiancé David; also 10 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Madison and Logan Nichols, Marina, Lucas and Sophia Santini, Abby Hazzard, Nate Rogers, Hadley Christ and Ella Bunting.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m., in the chapel of Calvary Baptist Church, 22860 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, or Calvary Baptist Church, 22860 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown, DE 19947.
