John A. Marchetti, enjoyed coaching football

November 11, 2019

John A. Marchetti, 81, of Rehoboth Beach passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.  He was born July 30, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Nicholas and Adelaide Marchetti.

John grew up in Philadelphia and attended Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C.  He built a career in the U.S. government, working for both the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Energy.  He retired after 42 dedicated years, and soon after, he and his wife, Angie, moved to Rehoboth Beach.  John was a lifelong football fan and loved coaching kids.  In his spare time, John enjoyed a football coaching career that spanned 25 years and included both high school and junior college football.  For a brief time, he was head football coach at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.  From there, he moved on to take the position of defensive line coach at Montgomery Junior College.  John truly enjoyed coaching, mentoring and inspiring the lives of the young men that played for him.

John was a past Grand Knight of Columbus at St. Matthias's Catholic Church in Lanham, Md., and was most recently a parishioner of St. Edmond Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach.  He loved ‘50s music, photography, and going to the beach.  John volunteered for 12 years with Mended Hearts and Beebe Hospital in Lewes.

Above all, John cherished time spent with those he held most dear.  He spent many hours watching his sons and grandchildren participating in sports, and was always their biggest fan.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Connie.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Angela Marchetti; his sons:  Nick Marchetti (Olga) of Monrovia, Md., and Chris Marchetti (Lori) of Millsboro; his grandchildren: Christina, Sydney, Vanessa, Nick and Lauren Marchetti; and his brother, Eugene Marchetti (Terry) of Silver Spring, Md.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at 4:30 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 3 p.m.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in John's memory to Beebe Healthcare 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
