John R. Ullom II quietly slipped away Thursday, May 28, 2026, leaving behind gardens he lovingly tended, meals that brought family and friends together, and a lifetime of cherished memories. Surrounded by love, he passed peacefully after a long and courageous battle, finally finding rest and peace.

Born May 7, 1946, he is preceded in death by his parents, Opal Ullom (St. Clair) and John R. Ullom.

John is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Catherine "Cathie" (Mruk) Ullom, with whom he shared a life filled with love, friendship, adventure and countless treasured memories.

He spent his early years in Waynesburg, Pa., and graduated from Waynesburg College, where he formed lifelong bonds with his fraternity brothers. He proudly served his country in the U.S Army.

John devoted 33 years of his professional career to Kmart, serving in management positions in several locations, including Buffalo, N.Y., where he met Cathie. Throughout his career, he earned the respect and friendship of colleagues through his strong work ethic, steady leadership and unwavering dedication.
Those who knew John knew that his greatest passions were cooking, gardening and bringing people together. Family and friends would travel miles for a Chef John dinner; his French onion soup was second to none! He took tremendous pride in his yard, gardens and plants, creating beautiful landscapes that reflected his patience, creativity and care. Friends and neighbors alike admired the beauty he cultivated around him.

John also loved traveling, especially to the beach and ocean. He enjoyed gathering with family and friends, playing cards, and sharing poker games with "the guys." These friendships brought him great joy and remained an important part of his life throughout the years.

After retiring 15 years ago, John and Cathie made their home in Lewes, where they enjoyed life in a welcoming community surrounded by neighbors and friends who quickly became family.

John will be remembered for his quiet strength, warm heart, dedication to family and friends, and the beauty he brought into the lives of those around him. His legacy lives in the memories he created, the friendships he cherished and the gardens he lovingly tended.

In addition to his wife, Cathie, John is survived by his daughter, Susan Hasenauer; granddaughters, Gabby and Mia; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Voytovich (Paul); brothers-in-law, Lawrence Mruk (Sandra), John Mruk (Cindy) and Mark Mruk (Paula); as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, -nephews and dear friends who were like family.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers, medical professionals, hospice team, friends and loved ones who provided support, compassion and comfort throughout John's illness.

A casual "Five O'clock Somewhere" Celebration of Life will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Friday, June 19, at Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant, 213 Anglers Road, Lewes. Family and friends are invited to come as they are, raise a glass, share memories and celebrate a life well lived.
