Johnny Elwood Thomas, proud veteran

Johnny Elwood Thomas, 57, of Milton passed Sunday Nov. 18, 2018. Johnny was born at Wilmington General Hospital April 4, 1961, to the late Viola C. Thomas and John (Ed) Thomas. He was a proud Native American Cherokee Indian with ancestors in West Virginia.

He is survived by three daughters, Tanya Seely, Katrina Thomas, Rylee Thomas and one son, John Thomas (Becca); beloved grandsons Evan (5), Luke (4) and Levi (3); sisters, Coriadellia (Ann) Thomas of Orlando, Fla., Wanda Lyons (Paul) of Delaware City, and Carl “Pete” Thomas (Debbie) of Bear; two nephews, Randy Thomas (Rose) and Paul Baiocco; lifelong companion, Renee Thomas of Rehoboth; and his daughter dog, Peaches. 

He joins his beloved brother, James Thomas, and sister, Willa Baiocco. 

He served his country as a tank mechanic for the U.S. Army, enlisting in 1979, and served in Germany as security at the Berlin Wall. He also served as a boatswain’s mate petty officer for the U.S. Coast Guard where he retired as a 100 percent disabled American veteran; his last duty station being Indian River. He was a great family man, and was very proud to spend time with his children and grandsons. He was a devout Eagles fan and a lover of all sports. He also enjoyed traveling, going to the gym, and talking to strangers during long Wawa coffee trips.

A viewing was held at Short Funeral Services in Milton Saturday, Nov 24. The interment service will be held at Delaware Veterans Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, Monday, Dec 3, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Wounded Warrior Project, https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
