Joseph P. Twaddell Sr., avid hunter

September 18, 2019

Joseph P. Twaddell Sr. (Just Joe), 76, of Lewes passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019.

Joe was born in West Chester, Pa., son of the late John and Rita (Donohue) Twaddell.  He resided most of his life in Kennett Square, Pa.  As a child he attended the St. Patrick School in Kennett Square, and later graduated from Bishop Shanahan High School in Downingtown, Pa.  Following graduation, Joseph spent a year volunteering with Catholic Charities in Bastrop, Texas.  He then worked alongside his father as a sign painter for Twaddell Sign Company in Avondale, Pa.

As a member of American Legion Post 17 in Lewes and the Italian American Club in Kennett Square, Joe made and maintained many lasting friendships.

Joe had many interests. He was an accomplished fisherman and was well known for his ability to pull a flounder from the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal or a striper from the Sassafras River with little effort. He was an avid hunter and for many years traveled to Bradford, Pa., with his father to hunt bears, and later hunted throughout Pennsylvania with friends and family for deer, dove and squirrels all of which became stews and jerky to share. Joe loved to wager, whether he was betting horses or playing his special numbers on the roulette wheel where luck was usually on his side.

Joe will be remembered by his friends, family, and especially his grandchildren, for his sense of humor, and he was always ready with a funny joke or anecdote.

He is survived by his love of 15 years, Mary Jo Peabody; three children, Joseph P. Jr. and wife Sandy of Elsmere, Tracie Twaddell of Kennett Square, and Amanda Twaddell of Wilmington; seven grandchildren, Jasmine Page, Hailey Sturgill, Sean Marich, Ruthann Sturgill, Lily Jo Little, Daisy Curtis and Winthrop Curtis; and his beloved sister, Evelyn Damico of Avondale.

A celebration of Joe’s life will take place in both Delaware and Pennsylvania and will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are welcome to be made to the Lewes Fire Department, P. O. Box 225, Lewes, DE 19958.

Arrangements in the care of Short Funeral Services of Milton.
