Joseph Quinnan, retired hairstylist

October 20, 2021

Joseph Quinnan (Joe, Sonny) was born in Scranton, Pa., Jan. 10, 1939. His father, Gerard Quinnan, was a coal miner and was later a machinist for Marshall Maintenance in Trenton, N.J. His mother, Margaret (Laggan) Quinnan, worked as a waitress and also at the grocery store on wheels that the family owned while still in Scranton. Joseph's only sibling was Cedes, who died in 1991.

The family moved from Scranton to Bordentown, N.J., when Joe was about 7. They occasionally transitioned back and forth between Scranton and the Trenton area, before settling in Hamilton Square, N.J., on Cumberland Road. Joe graduated from Trenton Catholic Boys' High School in 1959. After a brief stint as a teller at The First National Bank of Hamilton Square, he was drafted into the Army and served two years as a chaplain's assistant, and he was recognized by the South Korean government for his work teaching English to local citizens.

On June 20, 1964, Joe married Joyce Seliga. They moved to Alexandria, Va., until Joe was discharged from the Army in 1965. They then moved to New Jersey and purchased their first home in Hamilton Square. In 1967, their daughter Tracey Ann was born. Joe had several supervisory positions in a variety of industries until he began his career in hairstyling at The Princetonian in 1971. He served his apprenticeship there and became a licensed barber/stylist. By 1976, Joe had become accomplished in his field and recognized for his skill. He opened his own family hair salon, Pennington Crimpers, in Pennington, N.J. Pennington Crimpers employed a staff of seven stylists and was recognized for its professionalism and quality service.

Joe retired in 2012, and Joe and Joyce moved to Milton, where they spent 15 years enjoying their new community and many new friends they were blessed to make. In early 2021, their daughter Tracey and her family invited Joe and Joyce to move to their home in Magnolia.

Joe will be remembered for his great sense of humor and style, faith in God, love of family and friends, and enjoying his life with all of those closest to him. He will be missed by all.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Joyce Quinnan; his daughter, Tracey Ann Gross; son-in-law, Philip James Gross; grandchildren Tyler James Gross and Erin Irene Gross; as well as nephews Robert Cetkowski, Robert Thomas Seliga, and Mark Richard Stella.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 1, at St. Michael the Archangel/Mary Mother of Peace Parish, 202 Edward St., Georgetown. Friends may call one hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, due to their tireless efforts to revive Joe, contributions can be made to the Magnolia Fire Company (magnolia55.com), Delaware State Police-Camp Barnes (campbarnes.net/donations), or Tunnel to Towers (t2t.org).
