Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards recognize first responders

March 3, 2018

The Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce and Carl M. Freeman Companies recognized the outstanding achievements and service of police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services units from southern Sussex County at the 2018 Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards Luncheon. Hosted by The Den at Bear Trap Dunes, the Feb. 9 event recognized 17 service men and women, nominated by their superiors, for their work and achievements throughout the past year.

The Overall Valor Award recognized Officer First Class Nicholas Harrington of the Ocean View Police Department and Deputy First Class Anthony Rhode of the Worcester County, Md. Sheriff's Office. The two officers worked together in March 2017 to stop a dangerous suspect who fled from Ocean City, Md., into Ocean View. Chief Kenneth McLaughlin of the Ocean View Police Department nominated the officers for the award. He said, “Both officers stood firm in the face of danger, and their performance throughout this ordeal was exemplary."
