Joyce M. Malanka, retired secretary

Joyce M. Malanka, 77, of Ocean View, formerly of Clinton and Severna Park, Md., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, at her home.

She was born in Washington, D.C., Jan. 26, 1941, daughter of the late Bernard Riley and Mary (Garrett) Riley.  Joy graduated from St. Cecilia Catholic School in Washington, D.C.  

Joy worked as a secretary for the Department of the Army before starting her family.  As her children got older, she then worked in various capacities as a secretary for a variety of government agencies.  Once Joy retired and moved to Ocean View, she worked for 10 years at the Country Store in Fenwick Island.  

Joy enjoyed bowling, spending time with her grandchildren, going to the beach and making crafts.  She was also a collector of birdhouses and knickknacks.

She is survived by her husband of almost 56 years, Lawrence John Malanka; three children, Tim Malanka and his wife and Joy’s caregiver, Jayne of Fredericksburg, Va., Tracy Bunting and her husband, Donald of Georgetown, and Patrick Malanka of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Joan Turgeon of Northport, Fla., and Alice Ann Agrafiotis and her husband John of Venice, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 17, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m.  Interment will be held at a later date at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
