Juneteenth Celebration held at Richard Allen School

June 21, 2019

Juneteenth was celebrated June 15 in Georgetown as a parade passed around The Circle and concluded at the Richard Allen School, where participants were greeted by vendors with food and numerous items. The celebration was  filled with proclamations, dances, and speeches of appreciation, while local and state officials visited with attendees.

The event was sponsored by The Richard Allen Coalition, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Sussex County Alumnae, Restoration Worship Center, Everlasting Hope Ministries and Buffalo Soldiers motorcycle club.

Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas, and the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. Its name is a blend of "June" and "nineteenth," the date of its celebration.
