Kay Cummings directs ‘Three Tall Women,’ opening Sept. 20 in Rehoboth

September 15, 2019

“Three Tall Women,” Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, will open at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at Clear Space Theatre in Rehoboth Beach.

Director Kay Cummings said, “I leapt at the chance to direct this play! Albee is one of the 20th century’s greatest playwrights. He is provocative and disturbing, but he also is very witty and fun to watch. His work is always entertaining.”

“Three Tall Women” is Albee’s portrayal of women – characters known only as A, B and C – at three stages of their lives: youth, middle age, and old age. Cummings said, “Albee used his adopted mother as inspiration for the play.”

Albee’s inspiration was not born out of devotion. In “Stretching My Mind,” Albee wrote, “We had managed to make each other very unhappy over the years...I did not like her much...but I did admire her pride, her sense of self.  As she moved toward 90...I was touched by the survivor, the figure clinging to the wreckage only partly of her own making, refusing to go under.”

Cummings said, “‘Three Tall Women’ is an examination of the lives of all women – their expectations, their realities, and the consequences of their actions – through the simultaneous prisms of past, present and future. And each of those falls at a seminal point in recent history: the beginning, middle and end of the 20th century.”

Cummings has played leading roles off-Broadway, in national tours, stock, repertory theater, television soaps, series and commercials, and has appeared in major motion pictures as well as a series of acclaimed one-woman cabaret shows. Since moving to Delaware, Cummings has enjoyed working in theater again, teaching acting, appearing at CAMP Rehoboth in “Stop Kiss,” and as Dr. Kitty Cochran in “Last Summer at Bluefish Cove.” She directed “In the Wake,” and performed this summer at Clear Space as Rosie in “The Wedding Singer.”

“Three Tall Women” runs Friday to Sunday, Sept. 20 to 22, Sept. 27 to 29, and Oct. 4 to 6.

Performances are at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and at 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets for each show are $17 to $32.
