The following letter was sent to Lewes Mayor and City Council, with a copy submitted to the Cape Gazette for publication.
I wholeheartedly support an amendment to Lewes City Code to keep the menhaden net fishing reel at its current location in the Lewes Historic Society complex!
I appreciate the society’s investment of money and time in restoring this extremely unique piece and giving it a prominent, protected location. I offer my support as a close neighbor and a sixth-generation Lewes native.
The reel shines as a practical work of art, as well as an ingenious, human-powered, simple machine.
It tells an important story of the men who plied the inner boards with physical labor, doused with fishy drippings. It invites visitors and locals to learn the importance of our fishing industry, and the history of the adjoining African American neighborhood, the Happy Day Club music scene, and the Lewes African American Heritage Commission.
