Landscaping company celebrates 15 years

GreenTop owners continue tradition of customer service
March 12, 2020

During their high school years, Curtis Millman and Shawn Cortijo spent their free time landscaping.

“Really, we just liked being outside,” said Cortijo. “It’s as simple as that. We just decided to go with it.”

Over a decade later, the two own and run GreenTop Lawn and Landscaping. What started as a side project from two diligent teens is now a successful company in Sussex County. In March, GreenTop will celebrate 15 years in business.

What’s kept GreenTop going for so long? It’s their dedication to the area and their customers.

“We had the drive and the young age, but we needed to provide something that other people couldn’t. For us, that was the customer service side,” said Cortijo. “This area has a lot of retirees or second-home owners, so they don’t want to get their hands dirty. They can call us up anytime and we’ll be there for them.”

Known for premium grass-cutting, GreenTop also specializes in landscape design, irrigation, lawn treatments and snow removal, among a variety of other services.

Millman noted it’s a hands-on approach that keeps them excited. “We do it all. We don’t ask the other employees to do anything that we wouldn’t do ourselves,” he said.

Though they expected to have employees doing the jobs for them, and secretaries handling the business end 15 years in, they say now couldn’t see it any other way. Millman and Cortijo stick to the motto: “We don’t leave until everything is perfect.”

Along with helping their local customer base take care of their landscaping needs, GreenTop also sponsors local sports teams.

“We like to get our name out there through helping the community. We want to keep the small-company feel and have loyal customers in the area,” said Millman.
