In Sara Ford’s thoughtful letter requesting support for Immanuel Shelter, she asked how the Community Resource Center serves the homeless.
As a volunteer at the CRC, I would like to share with her and the Rehoboth-Lewes community some of the many ways they serve.
The CRC provides a day program in the morning after the shelters close where people who are homeless can come to get warm, take a shower, do laundry and have a hot meal.
They can come down to the Food Rescue and get a sandwich, snacks, and drinks to take along with them when they leave the center.
The CRC offers assistance in applying for jobs, with help in writing resumes and using available computers to apply online. They offer classes in budget counseling.
Bus passes and clothing vouchers to local thrift stores are provided.
Hats, gloves, socks and shoes are often given to homeless individuals who need them. The Code Purple Shelter at the Troop 7 post provides a hot meal and warm place to sleep at night for those individuals who were not able to get into Immanuel Shelter for a variety of reasons.
All three of these agencies serve the homeless in our community through the work of caring volunteers and generous donations.
It is my sincere hope that in the coming year these groups can work in closer cooperation and provide a more permanent place for homeless individuals to not only obtain emergency shelter, but also to find a path forward toward self-sufficiency.
If anyone would like to learn more about all that the Community Resource Center does, and support this wonderful agency, please come to the spring fundraiser, Sowing Seeds of Change at Irish Eyes in Lewes, March 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are available at www.RehobothCommunityCenter.org.
