Let’s never forget on Memorial Day

May 21, 2020

The following was submitted by Billie Myers Meeks of Lewes, daughter of Cpl. William H. Myers Jr., killed in action Feb. 3, 1945, and resting in the Netherlands American Cemetery & Memorial, Margraten.

Dear Allied families and friends,

May 8 was the 75th anniversary of victory.   This event had to be celebrated as it should be ... and then this cursed virus came to cancel everything.  So in each town, village in France we celebrated this anniversary in a very strange way ... to only a few ... far from each other!

Unfortunately, we have had other concerns for the past few weeks like most of you.  Nevertheless, I wanted to tell you that the memory remains...forever!  Our freedom today has only been obtained by the sacrifice of our allied valeureux.  This we do not forget.

As we do not forget our valiant Veterans whom we can still congratulate, we also do not forget all these families that the war broke.  Each May 8 is the occasion to measure the debt which binds us to these families, these nations.  We will never forget!

With this current situation, there will be no Memorial Day this year.  Certainly the D-Day ceremonies will also be cancelled.  Anyway, for the moment, we cannot travel more than 100 km from home.  You and your countries are in our hearts and our thoughts.  Martine and I are fine.  Our children, too.  Even if we are worried about “our” Americans, we can say that for the moment everything is fine.

We hope all is well for you and your families.  By this little message, I just wanted to tell you that even if time passes, we do not forget what we owe you.
With all our gratitude

Jacky Emery
