Letter: Begin to address the threat of climate change

November 30, 2018

The partisan divide has been bridged with a bipartisan climate change bill introduced Nov. 27 by Democrats and Republicans. Finally!  This bill was introduced days after the two climate reports were released by the Trump administration and the United Nations, each warning of the measurable effects of climate change and the likely devastating impacts to humans.

This landmark bill (Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act) will give us a running start on building support for this program of putting a price on carbon pollution. It deserves support from both sides of the aisle.

How does it work? Carbon fuel producers will pay a fee based on tons of carbon dioxide emitted, and the money collected will be returned to American families as “carbon” dividends each month by the Treasury Department. Thus, this bipartisan solution will reduce America’s carbon emissions fast, and seriously begin to address the threat of climate change.
