Letter: Clear Space design would destroy stately pine

April 12, 2019

As debate swirls around the proposed Clear Space Theatre, most concern has been centered around parking, traffic (both issues serious and deserving of thorough analysis), aesthetics of the building (is it an appropriate design for the entry into our small beach town?), etc. It has surprised me that no one (that I’ve heard from or no article I’ve read) has mentioned the stately and beautiful pine tree that would be lost if the current design of Clear Space is realized.

That tree is a beacon, a green welcome to our town and a species from which part of the north section of our city is named, “The Pines.”

That tree, standing singly at the entry to town, is one of the largest, healthiest, most perfectly formed pine trees not only in The Pines, but I would suspect in the city. Its loss would be a blow for all of us, not just those of us who have lived under its boughs for decades.

The city and its residents long ago recognized the importance of greenery at the beach, especially trees, and thus the creation of the tree committee.
I would urge that the possible loss of this massive pine be placed on your agenda and that you do your duty to weigh in against its potential loss.
