LETTER: Delaware AFL-CIO endorses Carper

September 4, 2018

As the president of the Delaware State AFL-CIO, I want to share with you why Delaware State AFL-CIO is proud to endorse Tom Carper for U.S. Senate.

Tom is a champion for Delaware’s workers and working families.

Tom is a national leader on infrastructure, and that’s a big deal for Delaware. Tom supports a $1 trillion investment in rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure to modernize roads, highways, bridges, transit systems, ports and broadband. Tom’s plan would repeal the Trump tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, and create thousands of jobs here in Delaware. And, as the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Tom is a strong proponent for green manufacturing jobs that boost economic growth and lead to cleaner air and water. That’s a win-win for Delaware’s economy and environment.

Nobody knows Delaware’s workforce better than Tom. Whether it’s protecting jobs at the Port of Wilmington and Dover Air Force Base or replenishing our beaches and helping farmers in Sussex County, Tom fights for all of us. He works around the clock behind the scenes to support Delaware jobs. Tom saved hundreds of jobs at the USPS distribution center in Hares Corner. Tom secured nearly $150 million in federal funds to replenish our beaches and protect homes, businesses, and Delaware’s $3 billion tourism industry. He’s protecting the jobs at Amtrak’s maintenance shops in Wilmington and Bear.

Tom never gives up. When thousands of manufacturing jobs were lost during the Great Recession, Tom went to work with state and local leaders to bring new life – and jobs – to Delaware. He hasn’t quit on bringing back these jobs because he’s never quit on Delaware. He’s a leader with the experience we need right now to get this done.

In the U.S. Senate, Tom will continue to stand up to the Trump administration’s anti-worker agenda. Tom opposes so-called Right to Work laws and any misguided efforts to undermine Delaware’s workers’ rights to negotiate for better wages and conditions. Tom supports quality, affordable health care for all Delawareans. He helped stop the Republican crusade to repeal the ACA. Tom is standing up to Betsy DeVos’ extreme agenda to privatize education and cut college aid. Tom has and will continue to fight to protect the Social Security and Medicare benefits that we’ve earned. Tom sent Trump’s morally bankrupt former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt packing back to Oklahoma, and he’s leading the fight against Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, because these extreme nominees side with polluters over environmental protection.

Tom comes home to Delaware every night and travels up and down the state every week. He doesn’t take days off. That’s why he’s logged over 480,000 miles on his Chrysler minivan. Tom connects with the people he serves so he can be sure he knows just how to represent us in Washington. There’s no better leader to represent all of us in Washington today than Tom Carper.

I urge you to vote for my friend Tom – our friend of labor – Thursday, Sept. 6.

Jim Maravelias
president, Delaware State AFL-CIO
