Once again, Sussex County Council is struggling adopting a plan in the interest of the public. Once again, government mandates interfere.
With massive overdevelopment affecting our schools, traffic and emergency response times, HUD once again seeks priority special treatment, ignoring terribly important concerns of all the people. Its demands on our governor to ignore our present antiquated infrastructure, safety and quality of life of county residents show tremendous disregard of quality-of-life issues.
HUD’s suggestion of high-density workforce housing projects exacerbates the already mounting difficulties supposedly for the purpose of easing commute time for low-and middle-income workers. Yes, you read it correctly. They are to be built anywhere there are public water and sewer utilities. They’re to be incentivized and given quick approval process, further enriching the developer and elites.
Not a consideration of those still on septic, polluting our waterways, or those who worked their entire lives who, by the way, no doubt endured long, tedious commutes their entire working lives saving for their golden years. Mostly seniors, many elderly already living nearby will now face life-threatening traffic backups and concerns, terrified to drive for medical care and prescriptions.
Certainly not the lifestyle they were led to believe by realtors and chambers of commerce when they touted Sussex county as safe, comfortable, quiet and the ease of driving ... LSD.
Suddenly, easing a commute which isn’t even guaranteed as wording is vague, superseding the health and lifestyles of those who chose Sussex County to live out their golden years.
This is a priority?
Tell that to the multitude of those who drove many miles for 30 years or better, traveled public transportation for hours daily. Seems like our governor and senators have missed the boat here caving in to special interests without any merit whatsoever.
Please let your senators know where their priorities should be - the people over special interests. Hopefully, our council has the determination to make the intelligent, heartfelt, correct decision here.
