Letter: No tolerance for baby Jesus in Rehoboth

December 7, 2018

For years, a Christmas creche has been proudly displayed on the property of the M & T Bank on Rehoboth Avenue.

This year, the committee who assembles the creche asked Rehoboth City Manager Sharon Lynn if the creche could be on display in a more prominent location. Their request was granted and the beautiful Christmas creche was put up near the Bandstand this week.

Now, Sharon Lynn has demanded that the creche be removed by noon Dec. 6, or she will have it removed. What happened? Do we have to have representations of all holidays on display before any one symbol can be on display so no one will be offended?

Do we need a menorah, a Kwanzaa mishumaa saba, or a symbol of the winter solstice?

In a city that prides itself on diversity and tolerance, why is there no tolerance for baby Jesus?
