Letter: One-way Henlopen Avenue preposterous

February 8, 2019

The following letter was sent to Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Toni Sharp, with a copy submitted to the Cape Gazette for publication.

I am writing because you sit on the city’s transportation committee with someone named Dennis Diehl, who is quoted in a recent newspaper article as advocating a one-way, headed west future for Henlopen Avenue, as an accommodation to bicyclists.

Please ask Mr. Diehl to add up the average annual daily traffic use on Henlopen Avenue by cars and trucks, including emergency vehicles, and the average annual daily use by bicyclists.

I bet the ratio is a least 100 to 1. If I were running a business and someone said we should reconfigure everything to accommodate 1 percent of our business, they would soon be looking for employment elsewhere.
