Letter: Sussex building codes should be stricter

November 23, 2018

After having a career involving building and construction products, and recently observing the total destruction by fire of one of the residential buildings being built near the intersection of Route 24 and Route 5 in Long Neck, I can’t understand why our building codes don’t require buildings having multiple floors be constructed (maybe with the exception of the roof trusses) using metal studs for all the walls, concrete floor decks, and firecode (5/8) gypsum board for all walls and ceilings, as well as other gypsum products.

Any plywood used should have to be fire retardant. All these products are readily available.

I see buildings going up all over constructed almost entirely of wood. Our building codes should be updated to ensure the safety of our residents.
