Letter: Take a knee NFL

September 18, 2018

Have the courage to take a knee, or lock your arms
for justice,
for compassion,
for humanity,
for kindness,
for love,
for understanding,
for tolerance -
a prayer engrained in laudable virtues.

Pray for the murder of unarmed victims.
Pray for the military and local police.
Pray for the American Indians
skewered by Manifest Destiny.
Pray for the immigrants needing safety.
Pray for the hungry, the tired, the poor.
Pray for the broken bodies and minds
of America’s gladiators.
And pray for the fears
of another color.

Mindful of the reason,
respectful of the cause,
I take a Sunday knee
to honor the American flag.
