I just read with much sorrow the obituary of Pete Quint. Pete was the “mother” of the Cape Henlopen School District Program for the Academically Talented students in the 1980s and early 1990s, and it was my pleasure to both be in charge of that program and work directly with Pete. Pete was a graduate of Rehoboth High School and worked her entire career in the Cape Henlopen School District.
She was recognized as Cape’s Teacher of the Year in 1989-90, and working with the Cape PAT students she won a national championship in the Odyssey of the Mind competition which is the first event to put the Cape Henlopen School District on the national educational map.
Pete gave her heart and soul to the Cape district, and led Cape students to county, state, regional and, ultimately, national prominence. Many Cape students of the ‘80s and ‘90s will remember her valuable academic leadership (as I do), and many educators throughout the state will remember her also as she was recognized as a statewide leader on issues involving academically talented students.
When several of us worked on establishing the program that became the Academic Challenge Program at Del Tech, we sought out her valuable advice in setting up that successful program. She was a wonderful Cape educator who touched the lives of many Cape kids, fellow teachers and administrators in the 1970s-1990s.
