Letter: Where’s DelDOT on Royal Farms plan?

December 14, 2018

Holy mackerel! The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission is considering the approval of a Royal Farms store at the intersection of Routes 9 and 1 between Ace Hardware and the M&T Bank.

The commission has denied an initial request because of parking concerns. Parking concerns? Really? This intersection is one of the most poorly designed intersections (one of many) in the region with a five-way convoluted traffic flow and backed-up traffic in the intersection almost every day.

There could not be a worse location for another business than to squeeze it into this lot at this intersection, and add more traffic to the boondoggle.

To exit from the proposed location one must enter the clogged intersection or try to negotiate the heavy traffic on Route 1 south. A store at this location would exacerbate an already problematic traffic condition. Where’s the traffic-impact study? Where’s DelDOT when these plans are proposed?
