This time it is the Lewes 8-10 baseball all-star team that cruised through bracket play and into the championship.
In the second-round game, which stretched July 9-10 due to weather, Lewes piled on six runs in the first inning against Nanticoke and added another seven in the second inning to need just two runs in the third inning to claim a 15-0 victory. Alex Rebarchik gave up just one hit and struck out five in the three-inning shutout. Austin Coulter led the charge on offense with two hits and four RBIs. Rebarchik's three runs scored tied Conor Cleary for the team lead. They also led the team with two walks each. Luke Okolowicz and Crew Walls each had two steals, which helped get the boys to 10 steals as a team in the 15-0 win.
Against Lower Sussex July 12, things tightened up a bit. Luckily, they got to work early and scored at least a run in each of the first four innings, plating two in the second inning, to take a 5-1 lead heading into the final two frames. Jack Eames and Carter Coveleski’s two hits and one RBI each led the offense. Rebarchik crossed home twice to lead the team in runs scored.
Conor Cleary was on the bump for Lewes and went five innings, collecting four strikeouts and surrendering one earned run. Lower Sussex did manage to score in the fifth inning, but Cleary shut down any chance for a rally. Crew Walls came in for the save, and while one run scored, he limited the damage and collected the save in the 5-3 victory.
Lewes is set to take on the winner of Lower Sussex and Laurel, played after the Cape Gazette deadline, at Lower Sussex at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, in the 8-10 District 3 championship.
