Lewes Beach in 1970

May 30, 2023

Lewes Beach is quite a bit different today than it was in this 1970 photograph. Spanning from Iowa Avenue, on the left, to N. Washington Avenue, adjacent to Children’s Beach House, this photograph is a window back to a time when Lewes Beach was sparsely populated with mostly seasonal cottages. In the decades since, the vacant lots have been filled in with massive beach houses, though a few of the bungalows and cottages still remain.

  • Delaware Cape Region History in Photographs, published every Tuesday in the Cape Gazette, features historical photos from Delaware's Cape Region - particularly - and from throughout Sussex County and Delaware generally.
