Lewes in Bloom continues to work

May 19, 2020

On behalf of Lewes in Bloom, we want to acknowledge all the positive comments we have received from the Cape Gazette;  Dennis Forney’s ‘trip’ to see the tulips; Mr. Yerick’s kind letter to the editor, and the many responses/likes and shares to our Facebook posts.

Our community - citizens, businesses, government, and other organizations - has given us so much support and for this, Lewes in Bloom is truly grateful.

We appreciate when people see the tulips each spring and acknowledge our efforts. But truly the displays of tulips are a community effort. The bulbs are provided by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce; the government and businesses provide the areas for the plantings; the plantings are done by Lewes in Bloom volunteers; and in the end the citizens reap the rewards by digging up the bulbs for replanting in their own yards. At least that has been the tradition in past years.  This year, we will not hold the tulip dig.

It is so gratifying in these challenging times to hear that our work is helping many cope. This pandemic has taught us that we can never take anything for granted. Lewes in Bloom, like other nonprofit organizations, relies heavily on donations from the community – the same ones mentioned earlier.  COVID-19 has impacted this greatly.  Many businesses are struggling; individuals have lost jobs, and the local government is expecting a significant drop in revenue. All the more reason for our mission to beautify the city.

This is such a generous community, but with all the upheaval, we know requests for donations are coming from every direction.  Although Lewes in Bloom had to cancel a major plant order from a local nursery, we will step up to the plate and give it our best. It will be a new experience for us.  Working in small groups several shifts per day, our plan is to clean up the remains of the spring flowers, and plant what was ordered late last year.  We will make do with what we have, with all the love and gratitude that goes into our work.

To those who have supported us in the past, to the men and women who are on the frontline fighting COVID-19 and to those who work in less-than-adequate conditions to deliver essential services, our sincere thank you.  Each plant will be our gift to the community.  Our Facebook has a famous quote from Audrey Hepburn – “To plant a flower is to believe in the future.” We believe.

Stay safe, Lewes.
