Lewes in Bloom May Day entries due April 24

April 7, 2021

Lewes in Bloom will hold its inaugural Lewes May Day observance to welcome a long-awaited spring Saturday, May 1.

Merchants and residents of Lewes are invited to hang May baskets with fresh flowers or attach a bouquet with fresh flowers on their door or on the steps of their homes or businesses.

Lewes in Bloom will hold a judging of the baskets for ribbon awards in two categories – one for business participants and one for residential entries.

There will be first- and second-place awards in each category, plus a ribbon for most original basket.

All children who enter a May basket in the judging will receive a ribbon.

A form to enter the May basket judging is available online only at lewesinbloom.org. The entry deadline is Saturday, April 24.

Joining the May basket judging is optional, but Lewes in Bloom encourages residents to join the decorating and restore the tradition of honoring May Day with fresh flowers on their doors.

Decorating can be as simple as tying a daffodil with a ribbon to a doorknob or as elaborate as hanging a May basket or wreath filled with flower bouquets.

Anyone who doesn't have a garden with flowers to gather can consider buying a May basket or bouquet from a local florist.

Lewes in Bloom volunteers hope to start a new floral tradition for May Day in Lewes.
