Lewes farmers market continues at Shields Elementary Oct. 23

October 20, 2021

Customers looking for fresh local cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, baby kale, and butternut squash will find them all from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market at Shields Elementary School parking lot. The harvest is coming in and the market farmers are bringing potatoes, Brussels sprouts, winter squashes, sweet potatoes, lettuces, pears, apples, cider, mushrooms, turkey, pork, chicken, beef, crabs, freshly laid eggs, breads, jams and jellies, pastries, milk, yogurt, kombucha, fresh beauty products, and beautiful flower bouquets and wreaths.

The market will be at Shields each Saturday through Nov. 20. The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is a producer-only market and also a rain or shine market.

Parking is limited at the market, as the Lewes School parking lot is still fenced off due to construction. Customers are advised to either walk or bike to the market. The market thanks Beebe Healthcare for allowing customers to park in the outdoor Beebe lot in back of the hospital. Customers can access that parking area through the main entrance between Rite Aid and the hospital.

The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market. WIC and SFMNP coupons are also accepted at the market.

The HLFM also continues its partnership with the Epworth United Methodist Church Food Pantry. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from growers at the market to donate to the Epworth program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to Epworth. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.
