Lewes farmers market food drive to benefit Casa San Francisco Nov. 10, 17

November 9, 2018

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will conduct a food drive Saturdays, Nov. 10 and 17, to benefit Casa San Francisco in Milton.

Casa San Francisco offers an emergency shelter providing housing and three daily meals for up to 12 adults for a maximum of 30 days, a food cooperative helping families and individuals stretch their limited incomes by providing a supplemental bag of groceries once every month, and an Emergency Food Pantry stocked with donated food for people who are in crisis and cannot buy food.

The market continues to gather donated food from its vendors to give to Casa San Francisco, and customers can help by buying fresh produce from vendors and bringing it to the HLFM table for donation to the food bank. Also, there are specific nonperishable items that folks can bring to the market. The food bank has requested spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf-stable milk, rice and beans. Donors are asked to honor the HLFM’s mission and the health needs of folks who use the food bank by providing healthy foods. These items may also be brought to the HLFM table at the market.

The fall market is held at Shields Elementary School at Savannah Road and Sussex Drive. It is open 9 a.m. to noon, Saturdays through Nov. 18, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Convenient parking can be found at the adjacent Lewes School parking lot.

This Saturday, farmers/producers will be offering all the bounties of a fall harvest and more: Brussels sprouts, carrots, sweet potatoes, garlic, collard greens, peppers, white and orange cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, beets, winter squash, lettuces, apples, artisanal cheeses, mushrooms, oysters, cider, lamb, pork, jams and jellies, milk, yogurt, baked goods and fresh cut flowers for the table.

To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market. In addition to SNAP, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market now welcomes participants in Delaware's Women, Infants and Children program. WIC coupons can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the market.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is committed to supporting farmers who grow local fruits, vegetables and produce - a real farmers market.
