Free and has activities for all ages
September 16, 2019

Lewes Fire Department will host its inaugural fire prevention open house from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Station 2, 32198 Janice Road near the Nassau Bridge.

The event is free and has activities for all ages. Children will be given a passport with a firehouse map showing designated stations to visit in order to qualify for a prize and a raffle entry. The first 30 children to have all their station boxes stamped will receive a special Lewes Fire Department apparatus photo book. The first 50 will receive teddy bears, compliments of Jeanine O'Donnell State Farm Insurance. All participating children will receive prizes.

Lewes firefighters and committee Co-chairs Anthony Esposito and Robbie Stephens are enthusiastic about this new event. "We think this is going to be an event that grows every year. We speak to the kids during Fire Prevention Week and witness their excitement about fire prevention, but this is an opportunity for families to come together, see what we are all about, and learn what they can do to keep safe and what it takes for us to keep you safe,” said Esposito.

There will be live fire and vehicle extrication demonstrations, a smoke house, equipment displays, CPR presentations and children's activities. Auxiliary members will provide ambulance- and fire truck-shaped cookies for kids to decorate and eat. LFD mascot Sparky will also be available for photos and high-fives. Members will be on hand to guide, explain and demonstrate. There will be informational handouts, fire prevention materials and free smoke detectors. Taco Reho, The Big Salami, Suburban Farmhouse and 2 Dips Ice Cream trucks will be selling food onsite.

Members are seeking donations of gift baskets and other items from local businesses to offer as prizes and raffle items. For more information, or to support or help at this event, email LFDAUX@gmail.com or call 302-245-5474. All help will be appreciated.

Lewes’ brave volunteer firefighters give their best on people’s worst days. Since 1796, citizens of Lewes have stepped forward to join the ranks of the town's volunteer fire service. For 200 years, the ranks have been filled with men and women wanting to provide service for others.
