Lewes High School girls’ basketball 1935-36

March 4, 2023

The Cape Henlopen High School girls’ basketball team is fighting for a state championship, after posting an 18-2 regular season record.

The Vikings lost their first two games of the season and have won every game since, including the Henlopen Conference Championship over Woodbridge Feb. 25 and the second-round state tournament game over Saint Mark’s March 3.

The road was paved long ago by women such as these on the Lewes High School basketball team of 1935-36.

The short description with the photograph reads: The summons for basketball players on Nov. 25, brought out many contestants all full of enthusiasm to start the basketball season with a victory. The squad had practice regularly and with the support of the student body and Coach Holt, the team put forth their best efforts to win the first game. We were sorry to lose Peggy Beebe this year, who was a capable side center on the team for several years, but all positions on the team were capably filled, as our season indicates.

The girls were not identified in a particular order, but players included Elsie Moore, Lillian Marshall, Anna Beebe, Hazel Massey, Dolores Pierce, Marie Warrington, Kathleen Wiltbank, Florence Shek, Betty Scott, Blanche Lynch (captain), Lydia Thompson, Edna Moore, Louise Vaughn, Clara Graves, Fedonia McCracken, Thelma Conner, Ellanora Dutton, Marie Mai, Vivian Warren, Helen Rowe, Betty Shek, Katherine Hall and Edna Lange. The coach was Miss Holt. Managers included Evelyn Palmer and Isabelle Megee.
