Lewes Library Friends to host children’s and young adult book sale May 18

May 8, 2019

The Friends of Lewes Public Library will hold a children’s and young adult book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at the library.

New and used books for children and young adults will be available. Pricing for the sale is extremely competitive, with prices for young adult books starting at $1. Many used books for young children are priced at five for $2. New books are 25 percent off their original retail prices.

As the school year winds down, teachers begin sending home information on summer reading lists and programs. Summer reading is critical to a child's ability to not only retain information learned the previous year, but also to grow in knowledge and critical thinking skills for the coming year. Preventing summer learning loss is important to classroom success in the fall, and the books available at the sale will help families in that effort.

As an all-volunteer organization, Friends raises money to fulfill its mission of supporting the library primarily through membership dues, with major contributions from book and shop sales, as well as fundraising events such as special book sales.

As an independent library within the statewide system, the Lewes Public Library receives partial funding, 44 percent of its budget, from the Sussex County Department of Libraries and the Delaware Division of Libraries. The library must raise the remaining 54 percent of its annual budget.

The Friends group is the third largest funder for the library and its largest private funder, contributing about 8 percent toward that goal. Friends funds are used for book and media purchases, library programming, special projects, and other library needs. During FY18, Friends volunteers contributed 6,950 hours, the equivalent of 3.8 full-time employees. Most of those hours were dedicated to the annual book sale and operation of the Just Between Friends bookshop.
