Lewes man, 56, dies in scooter crash on Kings Highway

October 18, 2019

A 56-year-old Lewes man was killed Oct. 18 after crashing into a box truck while riding a scooter on Kings Highway.

Dale Carter was riding a 2012 scooter westbound on Kings Highway at 6:52 a.m. approaching the intersection of Clay Road when a 2018 Freightliner 6 wheel box truck traveling southbound on Clay Road failed to stop at the posted stop sign, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

The box truck entered the intersection directly in front of the scooter, which tried to swerve left but was unable, Jaffe said. As a result, she said, the right front of the box truck struck the right side of the scooter within the intersection.

The operator of the box truck, a 22-year-old male from Delmar, Md. was properly restrained and did not sustain injury.

Carter was transported to the Beebe Healthcare where he was pronounced deceased.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Kings Highway in the area of Clay Road was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
