Lewes man faces drug, weapon charges

A Lewes man faces charges after police investigating a shoplifting found drugs and weapons in his car on Christmas Eve.

Police were called to Helly Hansen Department Store on Seaside Outlet Drive at 11:51 p.m. for a shoplifting incident and were told the suspect fled in a Black Kia Optima with temporary tags, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

Police later saw the car on northbound Route 1 near Munchy Branch Road, and they conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, Jaffe said, police saw a handgun in the passenger’s seat. They also found about 10 grams of marijuana, less than a gram of cocaine, eight 9mm rounds loaded in a magazine and more than $600 in suspected drug proceeds.

Police charged Tre Jamal Edwards, 26, with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a deadly weapon by person prohibited, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $38,500 cash only bond.
