The Lewes business district is awash in red, white and blue for the Fourth of July, as merchants show off their America 250 spirit.
The decorated storefronts are not part of a contest, just the result of an idea from business owners Heidi Lowe, Ray Daminger and Matt DiSabatino.
Lowe said the decorating should be the start of something even bigger.
"We wanted to start with businesses and inspire the community to be part of the 250 celebration," Lowe said. "We want Second Street to serve as a kind of entrance leading to the Historic Lewes campus. So, keep adding flags."
Lowe said a flag on the side of her jewelry store on Front Street is 200 years old.
Mayor Amy Marasco said Lewes250 and the Greater Lewes Foundation took the idea and ran with it, and it has brought a special feel to the downtown area.
"We have seen such a burst of activity, the results have been fantastic," Marasco said.
Some merchants have gone beyond the outside and are featuring patriotic wares inside.
Lewes Dry Goods has a unique Christmas tree ornament, while others are selling America250 shirts, hats and mugs.
Heather Foley, owner of Lula Blue, said she is excited to be part of the effort.
"I love to decorate, so when I heard about this, it was like, 'Game on,'" she said. "I love the spirit of it, and especially love it here in Lewes. We really can pull off that small-town vibe."
Official Lewes250 items are available at Historic Lewes' Ryves Holt House on Second Street.
