Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary to host Taste of Culture at Ivy May 9

May 6, 2019

The Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary’s International Fund will host its second event to help improve school conditions in the impoverished rural Sirsi area of India, in cooperation with local Rotarians there.

The Rotary’s Taste of Culture event will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m., Thursday, May 9, at Ivy restaurant, 136 Dagsworthy Ave., Dewey Beach.

Tickets are $45 each or $80 per couple. Cost covers entertainment from the band Hot Sauce, and ample signature dishes from eight coastal restaurants featuring food from India, Japan, Mexico, Italy, the United States and more. The event will also include a wine tasting, silent auction and cash bar. A portion of each ticket cost will be tax-deductible.

Event coordinator Dr. Ram Hosmane, a local physician and Rotarian, describes rural Sirsi schools as needing toilets, hand-washing stations, clean drinking water, books, desks and playgrounds.

“These improvements will result in better attendance, improved studies, and greater continuity of education,” said Hosmane. Current school conditions in Sirsi result in low attendance and high dropout rates.

In past years, the Lewes-Rehoboth International Fund has sponsored two trips by teams of physicians and medical staff to Sirsi, and funding for technology in Sirsi schools.
