Lewes should act to rename Fourth Street

November 15, 2019

The very first word of Nick Roth’s article on the front page of the Nov. 8 Cape Gazette, “Church revives effort to rename Lewes street,” colors, or I should say mis-colors, the entire debate.

As a steering committee member of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, I fully support this effort by Rev. Edwards, the SDARJ, and many other members of our community. I, like a good proportion of the alliance, am not black.

To “color” this effort as one of “black residents of Lewes” does not draw a full picture of the endeavor or its wide backing. The council needs to consider the rich history of African-Americans in Lewes and honor those lives by appropriately renaming Fourth Street.

To do so is a sign to all Lewes residents that they and their contributions to our community matter.
