Burton performed patriotic service by supplying cloth for the Delaware Regiment.The Lewestown Chapter of the Delaware Society of the Sons of the American Revolution conducted a grave-marking ceremony May 14.
The chapter marked the grave of John Burton, a patriot who died in 1791, in the Burton Family Cemetery in Indian River Hundred. The small Burton family cemetery is owned by the Oak Crest Pond Homeowners Association.

The Lewestown chapter is planning more grave-marking ceremonies this year in honor of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
