Lewes to Turn the Town Teal for ovarian cancer awareness Aug. 30

August 28, 2019

For the fifth year, the City of Lewes is participating in a national campaign to create awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms. Volunteers will Turn The Town Teal at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 30, by tying ribbons to light poles in the Lewes historic business district.

The awareness initiative annually takes place in September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation sponsors this campaign in its efforts to help save more women’s lives.

Lewes Mayor Ted Becker, Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, and Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton, will join volunteers as they tie the first ribbon on a light pole adjacent to the Savannah Road entrance of Zwaanendael Park next to the Zwaanendael Museum. The volunteers will continue the process on the streets surrounding Second Street. Educational brochures will be available at local merchants to provide additional information.

Turn The Towns Teal will be represented at the event by Henrietta Belcher-Stack, an ovarian cancer survivor and DOCF volunteer. Beebe Healthcare and the Tunnell Cancer Center will be represented by Reba Tappan, manager of Beebe’s Bayside Women’s Health Group. Women’s health physicians Dr. Steve Berlin and Dr. Leo Eschbach will also attend the ceremony.

Residents are encouraged to join the campaign by tying teal ribbons on their mailboxes, doors, and sign posts to show support for ovarian cancer awareness. Other signs of support include wearing teal clothing on Tuesdays, teal hair extensions, teal awareness bands, teal ribbon car magnets and polishing nails as teal “tips and toes."
