February 25, 2022

A Lewes woman died in a single-car crash Feb. 25 after driving off Route 1, traveling down an embankment along the way and hitting a tree.

The crash happened at 7:31 a.m. when a Lewes woman, 68, was driving a 2019 BMW 330 sedan southbound on Route 1 near Rehoboth Avenue extended, and for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes, said Master Cpl. Heather Pepper of the Delaware State Police. The car crossed the Bay Vista Road intersection and exited the east edge of the roadway, striking a curb and several traffic signs, Pepper said.

The car then struck a steel handrail and traveled down an embankment before striking a small tree, eventually stopping at a fence in a parking lot on Oyster House Road, officials said.

The woman was the only occupant, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

The roadway was closed for about 2.5 hours while the investigation was completed, and the roadway cleared.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Cpl/3 Kenny Argo with the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-703-3264. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police, or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
