A Lewes woman died May 29 following a two-vehicle crash on Bowers Beach Road.
The crash happened about 6 p.m. when a 2008 Cadillac DTS driven by Dillon Satterfield, 26, of Frederica, was traveling westbound on Bowers Beach Road east of Skeeter Neck Road, and Satterfield tried to pass several vehicles also traveling westbound, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police.
As Satterfield crossed the double-yellow line into the eastbound lane, DeMalto said, a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan was traveling eastbound on Bowers Beach Road. Both drivers swerved into the eastbound shoulder of the roadway, resulting in a head-on collision between the vehicles, DeMalto said.
Satterfield was properly restrained; he was flown by helicopter to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The Volkswagen driver and his passenger, both 69 and from Lewes, were properly restrained. The driver was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The passenger was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for serious injuries, where she was later pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin, DeMalto said.
No other injuries were reported. Bowers Beach Road was closed for about four hours during the investigation.
Troopers obtained an arrest warrant for Satterfield in connection with felony second-degree vehicular homicide, felony first-degree vehicular assault, driving under the influence, reckless driving and improper passing.
