July 23, 2021

The Lewes/Rehoboth Major All-Stars defeated Milton 5-2 in the winner-take-all game for the District 3 Little League Championship July 22 at the Georgetown Little League complex. They move on to play in the state tournament at the Camden-Wyoming Little League beginning Wednesday, July 28.

Milton opened the scoring in the first inning when Aaden Johnson scored Trizton Willey, but the team left two runners on base. Lewes/Rehoboth answered with four runs in the bottom of the first when Nick Clampitt doubled, followed by two walks, setting up RBIs by Ben Tollett, Lukin Jones and Ethan James. That four-run first would hold up throughout the game for the home team.

Tollett led the Lewes/Rehoboth team, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Jack Simeone went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Jones went 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI. Clampitt and Chris Frisca each had a hit.

Tollett struck out seven Milton batters while walking one.

“I was really confident tonight,” Tollett said. “Our coaches told me to mix it up tonight and it worked out for me.”

“Ben Tollett is a top-notch pitcher,” said Lewes/Rehoboth manager Greg James. “I was pretty confident with him on the mound. He moves the ball around a lot. He threw a lot of stuff at them. But at no point was I overconfident, because the Milton team can change things with one swing of the bat. I wasn’t totally confident until that final out was made. I had some nerves through the whole game. I’m really proud of these kids.”

Johnson led the Milton squad at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Willey, Liam Mitchell and Trey Dickinson each had a hit.

Johnson came in from the bullpen and struck out six Lewes/Rehoboth batters, allowing just one run.

“This team is very special,“ Johnson said. “We’re a brotherhood and we went through it all together. We had ups and we had downs. The downs didn’t go our way, but the ups were great.”

“It was great to see the Cape community come out and support both teams in the championship games of the tournament,” said Milton coach Ukie Johnson. “The championship game was a great game; we just couldn't get that one big hit. Lewes/Rehoboth is a good team. I wish them the best in the state tournament. I can't tell you how proud I am of this team. We fought back from the loser’s bracket to get to the championship. I have coached many of these young men for several years and am sad for it to come to an end, but I know they will do great things. The Cape community should be proud. I know Milton is proud.”
