Lewis Godfrey Reeves, dedicated to helping others
Lewis Godfrey Reeves peacefully went home to be with his Lord surrounded by his family Saturday, June 8, 2019. He was 94 years old, 93 of which were very good and one not so.
He was born in Bridgeton, N.J., Dec. 7, 1924, to the late Reuben and Elsie (Daly) Reeves. He was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas Reeves, Howard Reeves, George Reeves and Reuben Reeves; and one sister Helen (Reeves) Menchaca. He is survived by one sister Elsie (Reeves) Riley; and one brother. Albert Reeves; three children, Lewis Reeves (Bonnie) of Dagsboro, Shirley (Donald) Begue of Cross City, Fla., and Helen (James) Havens of Millsboro; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He is a WWII U.S. Army veteran of the Pacific Theater serving in the Philippines and moving to Korea shortly after VJ Day. He was a forward observer for an artillery battalion clearing the hills and mountains surrounding Clarks Field.
Lewis worked for Western Union as a teenager delivering singing telegrams, New York Shipyard in Camden, N.J., and The Western Electric Co. before transferring to Bell of Pennsylvania. He retired from The Diamond State Telephone Co. of Delaware in 1983 after 35 years of service. He then worked 10 additional years with the Delmarva Phone Company of Millville. Lew spent his life dedicated to helping others, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Services are Saturday, June 15, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View. Viewing starts at 1 p.m., with the service beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will be 1 p.m., Monday June 17, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
